RESUMO

This study was carried out using 22 promising restorer lines of rice and their parental lines to study genetic variability and genetic advance for yield and yield-associated grain quality traits and floral traits. These genotypes are evaluated in a replicated trial using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications at the Experimental Farm of Sakha Agricultural Research Station, Sakha, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt, during the seasons from 2012 to 2020. Analysis of variance revealed that highly significant variations were observed among the genotypes for all the studied characters. Both GCV% and PCV% were high for the number of spikelets per panicle, the number of filled grains per panicle, and panicle weight. The genetic advance in the percentage of mean was high for days to plant height, panicle length, number of spikelets per panicle, number of filled grains per panicle, panicle weight, grain yield per plant, anther length, anther breadth, duration of floret opening, and head rice percentage. Mean performance of the rice genotypes indicated that the genotypes NRL 59, NRL 55, NRL 62, NRL 63, NRL 66, and NRL 54-2 were promising for grain yield and associated desirable traits. Thus, some of these promising lines can be promoted as a new rice variety and could be used as a source for developing new hybrid combinations in hybrid rice breeding programs. The percentage of advantage over better parent and Giza 178 as the commercial variety was significant and there were highly significant desirable values among the genotypes for all the studied traits in the two years, indicating that the selection is effective in the genetic improvements for these traits.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to detect the incidence and types of genital and renal duct anomalies associated with congenital absent vas deferens (CAVD). In 200 males with CAVD, the demographic characteristics, physical examination findings were evaluated. Scrotal ultrasonography and transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) were used as the diagnostic methods for evaluating unilateral or bilateral CAVD with associated abnormalities or agenesis of the testes, epididymes, seminal vesicles and prostate. Abdominal ultrasound was performed to detect any associated renal anomalies. There were a total of 111 CBAVD and 89 CUAVD males. Eight cases (8.98%) of CUAVD were associated with contralateral cryptorchidism. In most cases there were agenesis in the epididymal body and tail and seminal vesicles. Different types of renal anomalies (32.50%) especially renal agenesis were observed mainly in cases of left CUAVD and were predominately on the left hand side. An important implication of our study is the importance of requesting ultrasound of males with CAVD to discover any associated anomalies especially renal agenesis that may be ignored by many physicians.

RESUMO

"Electrical shock is the physiological reaction or injury caused by electric current passing through the human body. It occurs upon contact of a human body part with any source of electricity that causes a sufficient current through the skin, muscles, or hair causing undesirable effects ranging from simple burns to death." Ventricular fibrillation is believed to be the most common cause of death after electrical shock. "The ideal duration of cardiac resuscitation is unknown. Typically prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation is associated with poor neurologic outcomes and reduced long term survival. No consensus statement has been made and traditionally efforts are usually terminated after 15-30 minutes." The case under discussion seems worthy of the somewhat detailed description given. It is for a young man who survived after 65 minutes after electrical shock (ES) after prolonged high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), multiple defibrillations, and artificial ventilation without any sequelae. Early start of adequate chest compressions and close adherence to advanced cardiac life support protocols played a vital role in successful CPR.
